| Street Teams and Online Teams are not a new idea. Many bands today are asking their fans to help promote them. There seems to be a misconception that working on one
of the teams may be a lot of extremely hard work. Far
from it! |
| We're not asking people to stand on street corners for hours handing out flyers - much of what can be achieved by the teams can be done simply and easily. For instance, many of you who are online may find that you already do much of what being an Online E-Team contributor involves without even knowing it by talking about the band on other music forums! As for the Street Teams, it can be as simple as putting a flyer about the band up in your favourite music store. You never know who, or how many, may see it. |
| The information on this page will explain what it's all about and give you some great ideas if you are already part of the Street Team or E-Team. |

| What is a Street Team or an Online Team? |
| A street team is a group of fans that volunteer to help promote Marillion in their area. This includes, but is not limited to: passing out flyers, putting posters in local music stores (or anywhere that will let you), handing out promotional material such as stickers and postcards, and basically anything else you can do to spread the word about Marillion. You should put the promotional items we send you where you think people will see them best; that means schools, clubs, live events, shopping centres, records stores etc. Request Marillion songs on local radio stations, and write in to magazines and newspapers to tell them where the best music is. Basically, telling people about the band is the best way to get the message across. Sell the music you love! |
| An online team is a group of fans that helps spread the word about a band online using such things on message boards, chat forums, online shop reviews, social networks, etc. Even just changing your email signature to "Find a Better Way of Life at www.marillion.com" can help! |
|
|
|
| |
| What do I have to do as a contributor? |
| All we ask is that you use any items we send you, or you download from us, to promote the band. Bring them to concerts, work, college campuses, stores, festivals… wherever you can find potential fans, and then let us know what you have done by logging on to the Marillion Online Forums and posting. |
| On this page are ideas for both Street Teams and Online Teams - check them out to see how simple contributing is! |
| We reserve the right to remove and/or ban any individual who is unruly or disruptive from email and distribution lists, the online forum and any other activities. Such action will not be taken unless it is felt that said individual is detrimental to the team or Marillion themselves. Your actions as a contributor to the Street Teams are a direct reflection of the band. It is our responsibility to keep activities running in a positive and professional manner. We will not revoke contributor benefits because you do not do things such as hand out flyers, but for actions that specifically cause us problems. |
|
|
|
| |
| What will I be promoting? |
| We will be running several different projects such as promoting tour dates, and release dates for new albums, singles, videos, or other retail releases. All current projects will be listed in the Street Team / Online Team section of the Marillion Online Forum |
|
|
|
| |
|
| How can I join, and where do I have to live? |
| You don't need to 'join' any club or organisation to contribute to the Street Teams and Online Teams - all you need to do is register for the Marillion Online Forum. This is where we post all current activities, get feedback from other "members", and run competitions and give-aways. |
| Street Teams and Online Teams are world-wide. We welcome as many people from as many countries as possible. Whilst it would be nice to have everyone
working in groups to promote together, we realize that
not everyone lives near other fans. You can work individually,
or as a group. Who knows, you may meet other people in
your area that are fans even though you thought you were
the only fan where you live! |
| And remember you can get involved with both the Street Teams and Online Teams - the more you do, the more the word gets out. |
|
|
|
| |
| What do I get if I get involved? |
| Depending on when you get involved and where you live, we will send you a package with promotional items for putting up around in your local area - this is all dependent on current promotional plans, and all updates and materials ship-outs will be listed on the Marillion Online Forum |
| If you are getting involved with the Online Team, you can go visit the downloads section of this website for banners, desktops, and band photos to download now! |
| We will also be holding frequent prize drawings on the Marillion Online Forum for anyone involved with Street Teams and Online Teams to win anything from a t-shirt to a backstage pass to a show of your choice. |
| We will also be giving out 'spot prizes' for those who come up with the most creative ideas - we will usually need to see photos or website addresses of what you've done though so please send them to us either by post or email (See below!) |
|
|
|
| |
| How do I let you know what I've done? |
| We encourage your feedback of what you've been doing. Feedback should always be posted to the Marillion Online Forum as soon as possible |
| We’d also love to see photos of what you have been up to. If you are handing flyers out at a gig, take your camera and take pictures of the people you just gave them to. If you are putting up a poster at a music store, get a photo of it hanging on the wall or in the window. |
|
|
|
| |
|
| I'm out of flyers / materials to hand out. How do I get more? |
| We will let you know via the Marillion Online Forum when more materials become available for distribution. If you run out of show flyers, more can be downloaded from the downloads section of this website when available. |
| If you want to make your own flyers or posters, please send us a copy either by post or by email before using it - we’d like to see what you came up with. Who knows, we may ask if we can use it on this website for everyone to download! |
|
|
|
| |
| Are there rules about what I do with the materials you send me? |
| All flyers, materials, and/or merchandise we provide to you is to be given out freely. It may not be sold. |
| We understand that a lot of our fans are collectors and may want to keep some items from the street team packs for their own collection. We are fine with you keeping one of each item sent in the packs, but ask that you do not sell them to anyone. |
| Some stores and/or venues may have rules against handing out materials on their property. There may also be some areas that fans live in where it is against the law to affix stickers/posters to public property such as telephone poles. You may wish to check first to make sure you are allowed to put anything in these areas. |
| When using online forums and message boards, remember that there is a difference
between promotion and relentless ‘spamming’! If you’re unsure of the difference, please contact us to check first! |
|
|
|
| |
| How do I contact the Street Team 'headquarters'? |
| If you have any questions that are not answered on this page, or need to contact us for any other reason, just head over to the Marillion Online Forum and post your question - we handle all communication via the Forums to help answer the questions that others may have as well. |

| Put links to www.marillion.com in signature files |
| Put links in your signature in e-mail. A good example
of a signature to use:
Marillion's Upcoming Album 'Happiness is the Road'
Now Available to Pre-Order only at www.marillion.com
Find a Better Way of Life at
www.marillion.com
|
| Put links in your signature of any message boards you are part of that will allow a signature. |
|
| Post positive reviews to online shops |
| Many large online retailers such as Amazon or iTunes allow you to post reviews about releases you have bought or currently own. This is a great way to encourage sales - tell potential buyers about how much you love your favourite Marillion album, and include website links and/or references to www.marillion.com in your review. |
|
| Link to Marillion content on social networking sites |
| Social networking websites, such as MySpace and Facebook, all let you link to images, songs, or videos. You can add our Marillion songs to your profiles - but we ask that you please link to the official Marillion MySpace, YouTube, Last.fm and other Official Marillion accounts rather than uploading your own music. |
| We have created accounts at the more popular sites and uploaded our preferred songs and videos to allow you to link to us. |
| For other sites suck as Facebook and Flikr, post photos from the Marillion shows you've been to, the band members you've met, or other interesting images. Tag them with "Marillion" to make sure people can find them. |
|
| Post to music forums about new releases and tour dates |
| Go to related artist’s music forums and nicely post a message. Remember to use finesse and tact. Don’t harass people and be respectful of any place that you post. Above all don’t spam sites with multiple posts! Most of the time it is counter-productive and can sometimes, in severe cases, result in your losing your ISP (internet service provider) account. Spam has many different meanings, but mostly it is considered as sending large amounts of unsolicited e-mail meant to promote a product or service. |
| Search online for websites that have upcoming gig listings and make sure Marillion’s upcoming gigs are on there. |
|
| Keep online information about Marillion current |
| Review Marillion on your website if you have one. |
| If you have a website, please include one of our
web banners (available in the downloads section) on it |
| If you see any websites that have the bands old bio or photos on it, please send the new bio and photos (available in the downloads section) to them to be updated |
|
| Contact local publications |
| Call or email local newspapers, magazines, college papers, etc. and have them post listings of Marillion’s upcoming gigs in their concert sections, including gig info, address, times, ticket price, etc. |

| Distribute flyers at local venues, pubs, or gigs |
| It is generally a good idea to ask the club first for permission to pass materials out if you are planning on doing it inside. Alternatively, standing outside near the exit handing items out might present the best opportunity for getting to the most people as they leave the show. |
|
| Visit your local music shops |
| Check your local record shops to see if they have any Marillion albums in stock. When you visit the stores, write down the store location, name, and number, and also take note of the number of copies (if any) of Marbles, Somewhere Else, or the most recent Marillion releases that are stocked. Some shops will swear there is no such album. If they don’t have it in stock, contact us and we'll see if our distributor can get some to them. |
| Sometimes store managers want to know who you are and what you are doing there - if you need one, we can provide a letter from the band. Take that along with you to show them. |
| Check back with the stores / locations a few days later (visit them if possible) and see if the displays you put up are still there. |
| Ask the people who work at the store if they are willing to play tracks from the most recent Marillion release over their stereo or in their listening stations if they have them. Generally record companies pay to have albums put into listening stations but if the manager of the store likes what he/she hears there may still be a chance. |
| Bring your own stapler and tape. Most stores will want you to put up the flyers yourself... and take photos of your display! |
|
| Hang up flyers or posters |
| Good places to try are pubs, local colleges, internet cafes or wherever you can find places that might catch other music lover’s attention. Go crazy with them! Put them on post office bulletin boards, in bookstore windows, all over town. Visit the little stores as well as the big chains. |
| Sometimes store managers want to know who you are and what you are doing there. Included in your street team pack is a letter from the band. Take that along with you to show them. |

| Please remember there may be some areas where it is against the law to affix stickers/posters to public property such as telephone poles. You may wish to check first to make sure you are allowed to put anything in these areas. |
|
| Call local radio stations to request Marillion songs - especially songs from any new releases |
| If they say they do not have any Marillion material, please let us know and we will be sure to send them some. Once we do, try requesting it again and if they still say they do not have any, we will then contact them ourselves to say yes they do! |
| If you live in the UK, and know a radio station that may be interested in the band doing an acoustic set, let us know. Full details needed please. |
