John Helmer Mother Tongue
When Marillion were looking for a singer in 1988, EMI put them in touch with lyricist John Helmer. They were confident they could find a singer, but didn't know if they would also find an accomplished lyric-writer! When Steve Hogarth signed on in 1989, he brought with him several songs and lyric ideas, but by that time the band had chosen several Helmer lyrics they also liked. Seasons End was recorded, and the collaboration continued for several albums. He has also contributed lyrics to Steve Rothery's Wishing Tree project.
Helmer is also a published writer and this, his first book Mother Tongue, was released in 1999.
"Powerful and disturbing, 'Mother Tongue' is a novel about lust, secrecy and transgression. Set in Essex at the dawn of punk it centres on the tortured relationship between a fifteen year old boy and his mother."
"Libby Housemartin is beautiful, witty and flirtatious and everyone is in love with her - including her son Harry. But her love of freedom is wild and proves tragically explosive..."
"Painfully and unwillingly Harry is brought out of the dream of childhood in a process that shatters every aspect of their chilly middle class existence."
