Racket Club Studio Update : A Long Way To Go
"Ha ha, ha ha, Laughing all the way to the bank" Isn't that what they say? We've managed to collect enough money in advanced orders for the new album so we can all go away on holiday! We were getting on great as well… shame. A bit of poverty always helps to focus the mind on the job in hand. In fact poverty can be very good for the creative juices. Now that we've got a load of money sloshing around we've taken our eyes off the ball. I'd be surprised if we get the album finished by 2002 at the rate were working!
Seriously, we are totally knocked out with the response there's been to the advanced order idea. It really has meant for the first time that we can sign the sort of record deal we want rather than what we are forced into by financial necessity. I know it may seem unbelievable that were not all loaded but we have blown a lot of money on long tours that lose money and endless months in expensive recording studios making masterpieces like "Brave". The two albums in our careers that have taken the longest to record have been "Brave" and "Afraid of Sunlight". The two other distinctions they share are that they are generally considered to be our best albums and were both produced by Dave Meegan.
We have always wanted to work with Dave Meegan again and this year we finally made it happen. Dave was free at the same time we wanted to record. I can't say we were completely ready to record, as we hadn't written a single song on the day we started with Dave. The three ideas you can download off this website give you some idea of where we were on day 1 with Mr. Meegan. Incidentally, we have only used one of those ideas so far (Between You and Me). One of Dave's talents is to take an idle bunch of directionless musicians like ourselves and a half finished song - of which we have plenty - and in a matter of hours, turn out a fine tune ready for recording. We like that in a producer!
We spent a few days getting the first 3 songs ready to record and then committing them to tape - or hard disk, as is the norm these days. After some furious editing by Dave - about a week's worth actually- we went on to sort out the next three songs. As I type this Dave is again working his magic on the latest 3 backing tracks, making them ready to overdub. Meanwhile Steve H and myself arranged a song from a number of keyboard and vocal ideas we had. The rest of the guys seem to like it so we will go on to the next stage and play it as a band to see if we can get it fit for recording next week.
Anyway, we are having a lot of fun making this. We've got a long way to go but I think it's going to be a great one!
