Racket Club Studio Update : New Faces at The Racket Club
It's been a different week here at the Racket Club I have been rehearsing with another band! Such infidelity! But it's okay, it was with the full knowledge and permission of the "missus". Los Marillos took a week out so that I could rehearse with the h band for Geneva. There was a little tension as last minute changes had to be made for the rhythm section. The incomparable Chucho Merchan was called suddenly to Colombia where he had a family crisis, and so was replaced by the equally incomparable Jingles on bass, who proved to be more than up-to-the-task, despite having flown back from Hollywood and being a little dazed. The drum stool was also abandoned at the last minute by my old mate Geoff Dugmore who was betrothed to Ian McNabb and couldn't elope with yours truly. Aziz saved my bacon by managing to persuade Mike Wilson (Texas) to join the picnic ... and what a picnic it is! They just strutted through "You Dinosaur Thing" like they were born whistling it. Having heard 'em play "King" and the dark, brooding "The Last Thing" I have the feeling that Geneva ain't gonna be ready for us. But I think we're gonna be very ready for Geneva.
By next Wednesday I'll be back here in my corner of the Racket Club working through the new Marillion album with the boys and producer Dave Meegan. We have a great many interesting musical ideas - some very different influences, once again ...and I have a lot of words coming out of me at the moment, so, in theory, we're on the way to something "interesting"..
Latest news is that recording will commence on the 5th of June.. any "ragged man coming shuffling through" the Racket Club will probably be me. I must darn these trousers..
